Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Recently changed valve cover gaskets on a 2005
ford explorer changed out all intake o-rings and
fuel line o-rings but the truck is blowing white
smoke from tailpipe and running rich like gas
coming from the tailpipe. What is causing this?

White smoke is coolant and black smoke is running rich and blue smoke is oil.

Is there a sweet smell to the exhaust? Was it smoking before this work was done? If so, that would be the head gasket.

No sweet smell, anti freeze burning off smell, then not a head gasket. Have you let the engine warm up since the work and is the white smoke continuous once it is warmed up, or does it go away. Also is the check engine light on?

Let the truck run for over 15mins and white smoke still flowing out the tailpipe. And yes check engine light is on.

Burning coolant is what it appears Head or intake gaskets & cracks. Was it blowing white smoke before the intake O' rings replaced?

It would help to have the vehicle scanned for the trouble codes. I don't know what to think about the white smoke if there is no smell to it other than just normal exhaust smell, rich smell. Other that there is a sensor off causing it to run rich. Having what the codes are would help. Also the engine temperature is not overheating? And does the cooling system build up pressure?

If its a lot of fuel it may could be other than black as running rich is very small amounts of fuel % above normal. If there is a full on leak with an injector I think it is possible to get other than black smoke. Can you do a injector rebuild on all injectors if so also do a clean on them. Before I go on I think you should do a compression test on all cylinders to rule in or out the gaskets.

Let me say if you have a large amount of coolant in a cylinder then when spark plug sparks its burning water to vapor with help from the fuel from injector. The more coolant the less fuel gets burned and you exhaust is passing raw fuel. This is what I suspect. If you pass compression test on all cylinders let me know I will tell you how to rebuild the injectors and clean them too.

As far as injectors go they can get stuck close or open and one symptom is fuel coming out tail pipe, so if this is the case, you could have one issue or both gaskets and a stuck open injector.

If compression test good, buy rebuild kit for injectors. There are some small parts (filter & O' rings) that need taken off and I will look up yours to see if anything I need to see how yours ar made or together so I cans tell you which steps to take so this is general. After removing all those smallies, soak it in injector fluid to clean it up. Hook jumpers to it to power them up from battery (can use any small battery even 9v battery and if you want go to junk yard to cut off a injector connector with enough wire harness to reach to battery, connect rubber fuel line hose to turkey baster with threaded end screwed on hose pull plunger back to suck up injector cleaner then attach other end of 8 inch fuel line to injector (needs to be tight enough to fit snug on injector and snug to syringe, power up injector, should hear it pulse rapidly, same time apply slow but firm steady pressure to baster syringe plunger and let it empty the baster until cleaned and misting (atomizing the fuel), repeat if needed (until misting only). Install the new rebuild parts reinstall it. If it does not pulse (starts stops & repeats), it needs replaced. If it just sprays without pulsing its stuck open and may be just stuck or circuit is bad. If it does not start to close, replace it.

Parts stores lend out tools. Use a compression tester on it, lets find out the results each cylinder & go from there. If one or more is low this should be addressed before cleaning/testing injectors. Head & intake, Basically upper engine gasket kit removal/installation is involved. Injectors can be done just before re-installation of them.

I just done mine on a 4.0 took the injectors lose and gas went straight down the intake put it back together and it’s blowing white smoke and running very rich I’m going take it back apart to see if I have a stuck injector cause I know I don’t have a blown head gasket mine run perfect before I done the vale cover gasket
