Check the striker screwed into the side of the door jams where the lock engages. On the 2003 it is a post looking affair with a plastic ring (gray) wrapped around the metal striker. If it is worn badly or missing, this could cause the problem. If you have the stud type striker on the hatch the plastic spacer is replaceable and available at places like autozone. They are available for the hatch only. Use an allen wrency to remove the striker and replace the plastic spacer.
