80 till 99 was a chain then belt till 03 and 05 on some models then lifetime chain and jetta ,GTI T4 vr6 2.8, 09 TDI BELT driven. tight fit,drop engine some,replace water pump, recall in 09 most fell apart on warranty expiration day, hows that for timing,

The dealer keeps telling me to change the timing belt even though the maintenance book says to change at 120K. They say it's because I live in a low humidity climate.
