Is an engine flush ever recommended?

Asked by migration_no1newslad... Sep 23, 2013 at 05:13 PM about the 2007 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg Edition

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2007 VW Jetta Wolfsburg 2.5L with about 65,000 miles on it.  I had an oil
change today (was a couple months late getting a change).  I have always used
synthetic oil during the changes and have gone to the same oil change spot.  They
have previously done work on my car as well (the brakes).  Today, the tech checked
my oil with the dipstick and said the color of my oil (brown) suggests that I waited to
long in between changes and he recommended an engine flush.  He said without the
flush, I risk the oil becoming sludge which could cause a blown head gasket.  So, I got
the flush.  I've been googling ever since and have been finding forums where people are
saying the flush could actually cause damage, i.e., even resulting in the engine
seizing.  What is your opinion on this?  My first concern was that I was being charged
money for something I didn't need, but now, I am more concerned that the flush my
eventually damage my engine.

You were taken advantage of. Unless you went well over 10,000 miles using a full synthetic oil. Now a flush won't cause you engine to seize, but now you are going to have to change the oil even sooner to get the solvents out that they use in a so called 'flush' That is the danger, the solvents, and if not gotten out, completely and thoroughly, your oil viscosity will be out of whack and therin lies the problem. They do the same thing talking people in to transmission flushes...like they work on commission. They 'got' you. It's almost like they are trained in to how to spot somebody that does not know about these things. I am NOT calling you anything derogatory, please understand. we all have different areas of knowledge.

Thanks David. Was thinking what you are saying, but hoping I was wrong. How soon would you think I would need to get it changed again?

The thing is....there is no way to tell how much of the solvents are still in your engine. I hate to advise you to go to the expense of saying right now, but, say, no more than 1000 miles. That is even a bit extreme, that soon. But that will give you peace of mind. They may or may not have done it properly. And go somewhere else!
