What would cause loud thumping in the rear end

Sounds like flat tires

Look in the rear passenger wheel well, where the tire is. A common issue with the Escapes is it rusts there and the rear shock gets pushed into the body. Is the spare tire fully secured under the vehicle? Also check for other worn or broken suspension components.
