2007 chevy impala v6 won't engage gears

Asked by GuruD4LT6 Aug 02, 2017 at 11:17 PM about the 2007 Chevrolet Impala 3.5L LT FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2007 chevy impala v6, steering column
shifter will not engage gears. I can start the car,
press the brake to release transmission, go to put it
in gear and the shifter will slide all the way to the
bottom end without engaging any of the gears. Is
this a shifter cable problem, or is it something
else?

If it doe,s not stop at drive without pressing button, you have a shifter cable issue,if it does stop at drive you have tranny issue.

see the top of the transmission of the driver's side. have someone move the shifter and look to see if u can spot the wire moving. is the cable attached to linkage? be sure parking brake is set when doing this.
