Don't have reverse, but it drives. Do I need a new or
used transmission.

Maybe, maybe not. Take it to a shop and have it diagnosed. It's an old and not very valuable car so don't get carried away spending money on it. There are a zillion of these cars around so even finding a good used transmission should be no problem if repairing or rebuilding yours is not a good option.

Could be a coil on the trans spend the 75 bucks to have it checked out first. If the transmission is bad then always a new one is best
