Worth buying?

Asked by Meatbagg Feb 21, 2019 at 09:16 PM about the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt LT Sedan FWD

Question type: General

Is a 2007 cobalt really that bad?  I have a
chance to buy one; priced at 1,500, but the
seller is willing to drop it to $850 for me. I
know; it sounds like he’s trying to make a  bit
of money while unloading a piece of garbage
- all I can say is that my current car has just
been totalled, I need a replacement, and I
have virtually no money; it’s this or nothing.
And of course I’d have a mechanic check it
over before agreeing to a sale. Given that you
say ‘07 and earlier are not the best things to
buy under normal circumstances, what do
you think of it for my situation? Would you be
more likely to say, “Not the greatest car, but
at that price go for it”, or “Run, you fool, run!
RUUUUUUNNN!”

Not sure who you are talking to, but to answer your questions from my perspective...there's no reason to shy away from a Cobalt. They are great cars for the most part. As with any used car, there are no guarantees. Have it properly checked out by a mechanic if you are not able to evaluate it yourself. If it appears well kept, doesn't have a gazillion miles on it and doesn't feel all loose and rattley when you drive it then its probably going to be fine. For $850 you only have to get a year out of it to have got your money's worth. If it goes for longer without too many repair bills you're ahead of the game. If something major goes in that time don't be afraid to walk away from it and find something else.
