The oil light measures oil pressure, not the oil level. If it stays on for a long period of time I would say your oil pump is failing.

Check your oil level right now. If you are low on oil, when you turn, your pump will not sense pressure given low level of oil.Oil splashes from one side to the other in the pan, especially when vehicle is warm. That makes the oil more runny.People in colder states will see that more than southern states. However, if oil is at recommended level, your oil pump should be checked soon.If it is on it's way to failing, kiss your engine goodbye.
