I have 20" stock rims on my 2007 sierra 1500 classic SL2. Can I downsize the rims to 17" or 18"?

Short answer. Yes. But there are additional conveniences. Your speedometer and odometer will be off. And your fuel economy will go down.

Absolutely. With none of the previously mentioned issues if following steps are taken. Current wheel and tire combo overall circumstance...... Now after you pick your new wheels, do some research and pick the tire size for your new wheels that gives you the circumstance measurement closest to originals.... Bingo!

You're going to have to make up 2 to 3 inches of side wall. Look at 10 ply "E" rated tires.
