A coil could cause a light ticking or snapping sound if the insulation is perforated and the high voltage is leaking through the insulation to ground. Perhaps move the suspected coil to another cylinder to see if the noise moves.

Jim is correct, sometimes watching for a spark in the dark will reveal the problem.
