Could be as simple as a bad battery terminal connection. Disconnect, clean (with a wire brush or terminal cleaner), and reconnect the battery. When you have the engine running, are the headlights bright? A volt meter would be the best way to check but if the headlights are dim, you may have an alternator problem.
