1985 Fiero GT has a short somewhere.

Asked by demon_dobies Aug 29, 2015 at 04:10 PM about the 1985 Pontiac Fiero GT

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1985 Fiero GT will start and run but if discharges the battery over night must have a short somewhere, but not sure where to start looking.  Someone told me that they were bad for having shorts console.  Have pulled fuses to interior lights & radio, with no luck  the battery still discharges.  Anyone have this issue?  Any suggestions?

This might be helpful as well (I had an '86 Fiero GT and don't recall any battery drain issues, but I did have overheating and tranny problems): http://home.comcast.net/~fierocave/bat_leach.htm

You could install a battery cut off switch. These can even be positioned where they can be turned on and off without opening the hood. Just a way to go around the problem, if you cannot isolate the cause.

Check the battery cables where they mount to the car's frame. Replace them if you can. Poor condition battery cables can cause a whole lot of electrical and starting problems. Could even be a headlight motor not shutting off power source when closed. Thanks! mrfiero.com
