Since the HUMMER's 4x4 system is electronically controlled by a computer, try removing the battery for a while and plug it back in. If not the only way is to take it to the dealer...

you can try to remove the positive cable from the terminal, and attaching it to the negative side hooked up, again positive (red) cable to the black, and hold it for 30 seconds or so, but not likely to do anything. is it the electric push button type? if so pull the fuse and see what happens...

Something in the transfer case broke in mine and the dealer had to fix it.

My 03 H2 got stuck in low 4 lock, tried everything the manual suggested, it would act like it was trying to switch to another mode but would default to 4 low lock. Nursed it home and disconected the battery leads, both positive and negative and held them together for 30 seconds, reconnected the battery and started it up and voila, back in hi 4 normal driving mode.

#20, there's 3 speed sensors on top of your transmission, unclip, blow with air can, if don't work, replace, and all should be good

A few options, 1. shift into reverse and go about 25 feet, this might reset the differential. 2. go to YouTube and follow the procedure to put the transfer case into neutral which will take it out of 3 L then without starting the car press the 4 H button. 3. disconnect the negative battery cable for about 30 seconds which should reset the computer and turn the ignition to on without starting the car, press the 4 H button and see if that works. If none of those works it is off to the dealership.
