Brake dust is normal. Some types of pads claim to be dust free - This is an example --- http://www.amazon.com/NiBK-PN0510-Noise- Free-Dust-less-Friendly/dp/B00ZFNJ7R4/ref=sr_1_1? ie=UTF8&qid=1449516214&sr=8- 1&keywords=dust+free+brake+pads

You can always pull a wheel and look at the pad thickness to see if they are in need of replacement but the dust alone is not an indication of imminent brake failure. If you hear a high pitched squeal that could be the tell tale on the pads contacting the rotor which means you only have a small amount of pad life left.
