What would cause my car not to go in reverse or drive without any warning signs

2003 Xtype 120.000 miles on it . was running just fine and out of the blue it
will not move for me . no warning at all . No indicator lights lit up . I am dazed
and confused can anybody help me figure this one out ? I am stuck like chuck

I had the same problem twice the first time I towed the car home looked at the linkages from underneath the car and everything was connected. Took it down off the jacks tried it and it works like nothing is wrong. The second time I waited about five minutes moved the shifter back and forth and I got aplication. I suspect it maybe a switch to the transmission. Any ideas
