2002 Jaguar x-type 3.0 Transmission Fault

I recently bought a 2002 jaguar x-type. The previous owner took excellent care of the car
but I have realized that if I do not take it easy on the gas pedal when accelerating the car
will get stuck on the third gear and the display will read Transmission Fault. Any Ideas on
what this could be ?
