My 2004 x-type does the same. It is Definately NOT HOT. I'll be driving withTemp in normal range just below 1/2 way. Check Engine light comes on, then in 15 -30 seconds engine temp climbs to hot, red light turns on all in less than 5 seconds of starting to climb. Pull to side of road, engine is cool. Stop engine pause at least 10 sec, Restart engine and temp is OK but check eng light remains, drive 3 or 4 miles and Temp again climbs to HOT with red light. Funny thing, if I just ignore and driving to gas station and fill gas tank, the symptom stops and in 20 miles the check engine light turns off. All good till gas tank hits 5/8 to 1/2, then symptom reoccurs. If I skip the fill up and drive home. Next day problem repeats once temp is in normal range for a few minutes. Keep it above 5/8 and no problem. What should I replace to fix besides keep gas full.

your temp censor is going bad and sending the wrong sig to your computer but make sure the car has coolant

The car is 12 years old... check the bottom radiator hose and make sure it is not closing down with suction at high rpm. They are old and soft. When you stop, the hose goes back to normal shape and all is ok... for awhile. Try to see if the hose is sucked in as soon as you have to stop. Maybe have a passenger jump out real quick. Also, if that is it, you need to find out what is making is collapse. is the radiator filled to the proper level including the header tank?
