Will a bad O2 sensor cause a check engine light to come on and the engine to idle rough. It smoothes out some at higher rpm.

Just get the vehicle scanned for trouble codes at an auto parts store. Write down the codes and post them back here. The check engine light is on because of a trouble code, and the code will let you know what to look at for repair.
