I have a knocking noise on my 1996 chevy truck.

Asked by brm Dec 03, 2013 at 06:45 PM about the 1996 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Cheyenne Extended Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

It does the knock when the truck is cold and goes away when its warmed up. I changed
the oil from a 5w-30 to a 10w-30 and it went away for a while and now it started back
up. The truck almost up to 180,000 miles on it . I'm using super tech oil and the oil filter
is a ac delco. I been told by people that it could be a piston slap, lifters or that i change
oil brand. It could be anything and really want to know what it is rather than hearing
from different mechanics saying its this and that. Please help!

If its up top its a piston slap...if it's down below the crankshaft bearings are bad

Well at this point some Lucas will not hurt. It may help get rid of some noise but you still have the potential of it break one day.. I have used it and got results but if it's a bearing it's not long to live..

It may be a valve lifter needing replacing. It may be leaking and until the oil is built back up when started it will knock. check that out first before tearing down or replacing an entire motor.
