1996 C1500 loud noise trying to start

Asked by pcolamedtech Sep 20, 2014 at 08:57 AM about the 1996 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Silverado Stepside RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

A month ago my c1500 would drag but finnaly turn over, the other day I went to start and
it made a loud grinding metal noise and wouldnt start. Autozone tested starter and said it
was bad. Bought a new one and cranked ok but made a winding noise. next day tried to
crank and made loud metal noise. It broke the cone off the starter. I replaced starter, but
makes a loud metal sheering noise. If it turns over the engine sounds fine. The flywheel
teeth look good. I replaced the Cam position sensor too. any ideas, I love my truck. I
thought i might need to shim the starter, but its making the same noise that it was
making with the original starter. Thought maybe flywheel, but it would make a noise while
running, but it sounds great if you can get it to turn over.

Ive had the same problem on my 96 k1500 with both gear reduction starters and direct drive starter. Need to time my truck to pass smog but cant start while this issue exists. Gone through 5 duralast gold brand new starters now... HELP!!!

I’ve come Across this issue with 90c15 . I shimmed the starter, even though it was brand new . I have a 5speed and honestly before I did it, the only way I could get it to start was by putting it in gear and letting it jump then pushing the clutch in. The gear on the starter was going too far in, it was passing the the whole flywheel. I shimmed it one shim at a time and it now has no issues

Bought another starter today and there was service bulletin saying the crankshaft position sensor will cause it to grind and kickback when starting
