1996 Chevy 1500 4x4 700R4 - Heard a pop, lost all gears...

Asked by Earland Apr 25, 2015 at 10:09 AM about the 1996 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Silverado RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I was trying to turn around a few days ago.  I threw it into reverse while it was still
rolling forward slightly.  I heard a loud pop and then it wouldn't move.  I tried Reverse
and nothing.  Engine just revved up.  So I rolled backwards down a hill and put it into
park and it made a ratcheting sound as it went into park.  Also, car rolls while in park
as well.  My buddy who rebuilt the trans before I bought the truck said it was most
likely the sunshell, as its common and was the only thing he didn't replace.  So I pulled
the trans and took apart.   Honestly, I don't see a single broken part inside the thing.
I'm lost....

The ratcheting sound putting it in park is the parking pawl be damaged and that's probably why it now rolls in park.

Thanks for the response. However, I've disassembled the Trans, Parking pawl is fine. It only did it once, I know what that sounds is. There is actually nothing broken at all inside the transmission, not even the SunShell. Beginning to think its a transfer case issue....
