97 Chey Z71 miss and flood only when first cranked

Asked by Katlin Jan 28, 2018 at 04:51 PM about the 1997 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Silverado Extended Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When first started it has small miss and seems like
flooding. Then runs like a top. Changed plugs wires
cap rotor button fuel filter and put seafoam. It was
throwing a miss firing code but light went off after
tune up.

If it is running fine since the tune-up, I don't see the problem? If it is still acting up, if you have that spider fuel system, it is known for problems. A misfire code should tell you which cylinder, unless p0300. I'd use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. Just my opinion.

Thanks. It also has black smoke when it does this. Only when first cranked then smoothes out and no smoke.

Yes, it maybe trying to flood. Smell of your crankcase oil dipstick, does it smell like gas? If so, either you don't change oil and filter very often or you have a fuel pressure. Hopefully a fuel pressure gage will show a leak? After you build fuel pressure, turn off the key, see if fuel pressure will hold for a bit?

No it doesn't smell like gas in the oil. I'll try the fuel pressure. The truck had been sitting up for quite awhile. I was hoping it will clear up.
