Why is my 97 chevy Silverado c1500 whining?

Asked by Owentyree Dec 31, 2017 at 09:36 AM about the 1997 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Silverado Extended Cab Stepside RWD

Question type: General

For the past 20 years this truck has made a whining
noise and no body can figure it out. We have
changed almost every part on this truck and it still
whines. Any help?

Whining is usually alternator, power steering or transmission.

Try leaving the wife at home.

Pull the serpentine belt off and briefly start it. If the noise stopped then it is something that the belt turns.

Mine started whining when my IAC valve started to go bad... Its basically a tiny gap in the plunger that whistles while accelerating. Got pretty loud a few times too, but made it easier to diagnose. Easy screw out fix and replace right on the left side of throttle body.

Mine whines too. Thought it was the alternator took off the belt and still made the noise. Coming from the throttle body. Maybe a pump or valve or something in there. Going spray with some cleaners and check the lines.
