Is it scorching them or just going bad with no signs of anything?

There is a break down in your ignnition coil.Your probably finding red dust insife your distributor.A sure sign of weak fire and a bad ignition coil.

The contacts inside the cap are brass on the last one that i just changed they turned a white powdery look with black scores in the middle of each post

Sound,s like the distributor is bad again, the distributor ground,s through the block,if you have this kind of problem,i would think it would be a ground to block problem, check all ground lead,s to the block and to head,s,bad ground will cause this.
