actually there is a small wire that squeezed into the grove at the end of the axle shaft...one on each axle...holds them into the gearbox/differential~

judge_roy is right with the picture.Sometimes that ring has 2 little holes on the end of the circle of the ring. That ring is called an E-CLIP and they are a pain in the BUTT to remove. But to make it easy on yourself you can purchase a pair of E-CLIP pliers at a hardware store or auto parts store.Make sure to check your c.v. boots for cracks if you are just replacing the joint. If replacing full shaft you will get new boots.Make sure you use ALL OF THE GREASE you get.GOOD LUCK!!!

These answers are not helpful enough. How do you get the clip to release, since it is "inside" the housing?? Need to know Asap please!

Success ! We got one of those "slide weights", and attached a wheel puller (looks sort of like a foot) to it, put the foot behind the large metal hub, and slammed the weight back toward us. The axle popped out on the second slam. Nice ! Good luck..
