What is traction control and why does to light come on

I have a 1996 Buick Park Ave Ultra Supercharged and my traction control light is on.
What is traction control ? What does it do? Is it related to brake system? Also how can it
be fixed?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. PLEASE !!!!

When one of your front wheels slip during acceleration, the traction control reduces engine power, and uses the anti-lock to pulse the brakes on that wheel. This directs power to the other front wheel, to help you get moving.
