only have 1rst and 2nd gear and no overdrive or cruise control

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

so I have a 1998 Buick lesabre limited that was sitting for two years after
overdrive and 3rd gear just stopped working, came to a stop at a red light and
when it went to take off it did nothing. acts like it was in neutral. so now its in my
hands and I'm trying to get it fixed without having to drop $4000 into a rebuilt
transmission. what would cause this?

There's a shaft inside of the transmission that wasn't hardened at the factory so the splines break off. When that happens you lose overdrive and TCC lock in. The shaft can be replaced for about $1500 with a better aftermarket one. Another option is to get a good used transmission from the junkyard. At this point it's probably not worth fixing though. Hope that helps! Jim
