There are several things that can cause backfire on an engine. Plugs, wires, fuel pump, coil packs and the list goes on. First thing to try is to take the car to a local auto parts store and have them put it on code reader. If they have a higher end reader you may be able to detect a problem here. Also another trick to try is to get your car into a totally dark garage. With the hood open look for spark leaks from the plug wires while the car is running. Of course be careful of exhaust gas. This test should only take a few seconds, but is a good way to check for bad wires, which is one possible cause of the backfiring. Check back when you get this far if your still having problems.
