Sluggish acceleration

Asked by Andrea Mar 31, 2018 at 10:34 AM about the 2002 Buick Century Limited Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2002 buick century (200k miles)has sluggish
acceleration, (barely goes with pedal to floor)but
only when i first get in, start it and start driving. It
lasts about 15 to 30 seconds and then snaps out
of it and is perfectly normal. It happens almost
every time i drive. I have the following dash lights
on; trac off, brake,  service vehicle soon,  and anti
lock, and once on a while the service engine soon
light will temporarily come on. So while the
sluggish acceleration is happening all of these
lights turn off and when the car snaps out of
whatever is happening the lights come back on.
The car has no other issues and otherwise runs
great. Any ideas of whats going on?

Did you ever figure the cause of this .... mine has the same problem. Replaced the egr valve as well as coil ignition censor all 3. Also put new plugs and wires and replace the vapor cartridge. I’m still having the same issue. Also did a transmission check. No metals or burnt cooler fluid. I get a whistle sound when accelerating so I replaced the belt. Still have a whistle and still no true rev to the floor power. Beehive will run hot if I push it up a steep incline. Open to any suggestions

I fixed mine. With an ignition control modual. Sits under the coul packs. Also if you've ever replaced cam sensor. Anything over 96 needs to have a relearn procedure done.

A whistle sound is usually a vacuum leak. Its running hot because the leak is causing a lean fuel mixture. I know its an old post but maybe it will help someone else.
