Most important is to keep the tires full of air. As it get cold, air contracts and pressures go down. For maximum MPG's, run a few pounds harder than recommended. On a older engien, a new O2 sensor can help. They start getting slow around 80,000 miles. Here's a bunch of tips - http://www.fuelly.com/tips/

always drive away from headwind, takes 1 hp for every 10 mph wind, remove all clutter like hood deflectors, antennas, side mirrors, ect.flip to netrual once moving fast and hold till 15 or 20 mph unless on freeway then 35 40,shutdown every stop more than 1 1/2 minutes long, and a tuneup of corse ,if everyone did this fuel would drop 80 % in price ,as a bonus

Driving at moderate speeds and not red-lining the engine on the car certainly helps. Driving fast and THEN having to stop quickly also doesn't help fuel economy. Making sure you have a clean air filter also save fuel. One more thing I thought of is to watch the overall weight inside the car...so don't keep a lot of heavy items in your trunk or back seat for extended periods, if you can help it...and NO fat kids in the back seat...LOL Just kidding!

all the answers are great and funny so keep them coming in! im working on a more drastic idea too like a portable hho generator its been difficult to find what I want to make it.

I too have an invention "the Recaptor" what uses pneumatic energy to charge up an hydraulic accumulator (bosch 10 litre) then into a throttle control (thumb control) while simultaineosly kicking with both legs (not tied together) and pushing and pulling with both arms. steering is 90* to full lock and 90* the other way, no more exotic than bicycle steering, also capturing forces thru an hydraulic motor/brake that has the inner race clamped and the outer race with the wheel on it a kind of 'centerless' design with just the fittings goin into the hub top and bottom- the hydraulic fluid has no where to go except back thru a one way ticket back to the accumulator- message bob_nueske for more-

No gasoline....the big boys would shut me down in an heartbeat! really must stick nubby tires on it and make it an off-road energy recapturing vehicle...body design ain't that sexy on this one, the original "recaptor" was designed after a (california's own) austin boat-tail speedster, the accumulator can rest safely in the boat-tail and not be in anyone's way.

short trips.. use the bicycle. glide the car when u can on downslopes, approach to off ramps, and red lights. have specified tire inflation(on dry days i go .5 psi+). also.. i 've noticed at gas stations that peeps been asking for change to get fuel. :P

put e3 diamond tip plugs an plug wires an put a cold air intake on it an plus also go an make sure u clean ur egr valve a lot if u use 89 an every 3 month if u use 93 plus i also fount out by test by trial go to ur local auto parts store an get some stp or some nos octane booster an put a half of bottle for a full tank or little under a half according to ur tank size an it will help a lot i was going to ohio in a sonata an before i was using it i was spending 60 bucks to get there an when i started using it i only spent 35 to get there so it gave an amazing percent of gas mileage to me an didn't go out of the tail pipe
