This is a pretty common problem. You can see videos on this online. Diagnostics might show trouble in the motor, sensor, wiring, or maybe blown fuses.
If you hear it attempting to move the liftgate, but it fails, it could be that the liftgate struts are damaged, making the door to heavy to lift.
