Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car won't start. The Security
system light flashes. How can I reset
the security system or turn it off so
that the ignition will recognize the chip

Most likely the ignition lock cylinder is bad. There's two tiny wires inside of the lock cylinder that contact the chip on your ignition key. These wires break over time and no longer make contact with the chip so the computer thinks someone is trying to start it without a key. The new lock will come with a template for cutting new VATS keys. You must measure the resistance value of the chip on your current ignition key and compare it to the chart below to determine which key you have. There were 15 possibilities. Once you know what key you have you need to buy that number VATS key blank and use the template to get the new key cut. Hope that helps! Jim
