What is wrong with my car?

Asked by terencetracey Aug 23, 2021 at 04:50 AM about the 2007 Buick Lucerne V6 CXL FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When car “acts up”, the temperature gauge springs
up and down, sometimes even just moments after
starting from cold.  My traction control light will also
come on and I can feel a reduction in engine
power.  I took to auto store and codes are P1258
and C0242-71.

Thermostat has been changed, so I don’t think that
is the problem.  I also put on a new OEM throttle
body and completed manual relearn procedure.

The P1258 code is going to be the coolant temperature sensor. It's either bad or the wiring going to the sensor has a bad connection. The C0242 71 code is most likely the Electronic Brake Control Module (ECBM) is not working properly. Make sure you check the wiring and connections going to the module before you replace the module, they're not cheap! Another, rather unlikely, cause for this code is a bad Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Hope that helps! Jim
