My 06 Outback Check Engine Light and Cruise Control light

Asked by snhuk Nov 23, 2015 at 02:54 PM about the 2006 Subaru Outback 2.5 XT Wagon AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My check engine light came on at the same time the cruise control light started blinking. The diagnosis says that #2 and 4 cylinders are missing and it is running lean. It runs fine down the road but idles rough. Can't get it in till next week and need it for thanksgiving trip. Thought maybe the combination of the two lights coming on at the same time provides a hint. Any out there experience this before? It is the 4 cylinder turbo.

I would install new spark plugs for a starter. Don't take it on a long trip until the problem is addressed as you may end up stranded on the road.

No...probably not head gaskets. Since the 2&4 ignition cables are paired, check that they're not touching each other and perhaps misfiring. Dress them away from engine intake metal too. Check plugs. If plugs and wires are ok swap out a coil pack as you may have an internal crack. If none of the above maybe the turbo burned valves on that (driver side) head? Ask the WRX people, as turbos commonly screw up these motors.

2005-2006 2.5t motors are famous for lack of durability, as they're not strong enough for turbo pressures over a long time. Most here in the northeast are in salvage yards by now, so get too used to spending kilobucks servicing your 10 year old. And NEVER replace a blown turbo, as detritus in the host motor will take it out before much longer. THEN you'll REALLY be pissed!
