2007 legacy low cost engine replacement

Asked by Daryl May 06, 2020 at 01:46 AM about the 2007 Subaru Legacy 2.5i AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I inherited a 2007 legacy that's been very well
taken care of but needs a new engine. Thing is I
can't afford to spend $1000+ on a direct
replacement for the 2.5 H4 SOHC that's in it. I need
to know if there are any other engines that will
work in this model and typically come with a
smaller price tag

Nothing else would be cheaper. Alternate engines cost a lot to adapt.

I was afraid that would be the case thanks though. I guess a rebuild kit is probably gonna be the way to go

You can try carpart.com for a good used engine from a salvage yard. Hope that helps! Jim

DO NOT REBUILD a Subaru flat four! It's a lot safer and cheaper to chase a clean (dry) 2006-2007 (or possibly 2008-2009 w/ exhaust mods) motor and drop it in. Yes, the whole job will cost you $1.5-2k.

I don't have that much to spend, a rebuild kit will be my last option. I'm going to check a salvage yard owned by a family friend within a few days, I'm hoping he'll have one that's been rear-ended or tboned without hurting the motor so I can get it as a cheap parts car, or at least an engine that will fit

I was confused by what you call a "rebuild kit." Typically wrenches who buy a salvage 2000- 2009 2,5i may exercise due diligence by tearing off the heads and having a machinist pressure-test and assure flatness and no valve issues. Then the HGs, t-belt, idler, and tensioner are replaced. Torquing the HGs carefully is de riguer. If you don't have prowess therein do NOT try this yourself. Be careful!
