Why the check engine light on and cruise control

Because Subaru links the CC light function to the CEL for increased visibility. Just check and clear the CEL and the CC will self-actuate.

You can use a code scanner to clear the light but it will come back on. Better to read the codes and fix the problem the light is warning you about.

FOR's right except that rarely a CEL is a one-off and MAY not recur once cleared. This is the case in the event of a loose gas cap, deep puddle quenching a cat, or rain/fog causing a momentary misfire.
