Either use a scan tool from your local parts store, or just disconnect you negative battery terminal for about 5 minutes.

Disconnecting the battery is not the best idea as you may wipe out settings that you want. It is better to use a scan tool to delete the old codes. Auto parts stores can do it for free.

Replacing a coil can be done with the battery connected.

That doesn't really work. I just took my car for an inspection after disconnecting the negative battery terminal. I got not ready rejection from the state inspection place
