Rebuilt starter issue I think

40

Asked by GSA_4507 Feb 15, 2017 at 05:32 PM about the 2007 Dodge Dakota SLT Club Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I put a new Battery, and a rebuilt
starter from auto zone in my truck.
Every now and then since I put the
starter in the solenoid hangs up or
grinds.  I took it out and replaced it
with another one and it does the
same thing .I even change the relay,
it never did that until I put the
rebuilt one in. Should I take it back
and get a brand new one

I would exchange it again until you get one that works properly. I should not grind and the solenoid should not hang up. Make sure the teeth on the flex plate are good and not chewed up.

Thank you ,I'll do that. I think that the flex plate is good because I never had an issue until I put in the rebuilt one. So I'm taking it back and getting a new one non rebuilt

I don't think there are starter shims for this one. Js08016

There where no shims in the old one and this is supposed to be a oem rebuilt , maybe I'll try that or just take it back and spend a little more money and get brand new one

Yes, for some reasons these starters are fussy to rebuild. And as far as I know Chevy is the only one that came up with the shim idea. I use to rebuild starters and alternators.

Auto-zone is not the best option for rebuilt/refurbed parts and new batteries unless its their top of the line $200 batteries.

Update, I took the advice and returned the rebuilt starter and got a brand new one and I have no more issues. Thanks for the help
