Loss of power in acceleration
Asked by Emilly Jul 17, 2018 at 06:20 PM about the 2007 Ford F-150 FX4
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Truck runs but when it's time to get in the gas and
go there is no go. It takes a while to get up to
speed. I cannot pass or pull out into traffic.
Begenning of acceleration or not there is just no
get up and go. We have changed fuel pump,
investigated the exhaust including catalytic
converters and O2 censors. We have brought it to 2
different mechanics with no answer. I love my
truck and am separate for an answer. I'm willing to
drop a new motor in it being it has 211 k miles but
what if this doesn't fix the problem.

Did you ever find out the problem? I have a 2007 Ford F-150 with the exact same problem. We have done the same as you in process of ilemination & still haven’t been able to fix the problem. I love my truck too so I’d really like to be able to repair it. Please email me at makynna1@gmail.com
I had the same problem with my 2001 dodge Dakota and it was the catalyst converters mine had 3. But instead of replacing them I cut them off then 3 weeks later it jumped time and now I've got to get a new motor . But I bet u its ur converter but get them replaced don't cut off ur self . I found out the hard way but it did have run better after I cut them off
Vehicle speed sensor
This is ur problem. At the gas pedal there is an electrical outlet circuit. Replace the gas pedal.ur truck should run fine
Please let me know if uv found someone who knows what in the world they r doing as a mechanical technician. Not just a guesser n parts changer...they just take ur money n ur sbnr... sorry but no relief...lol.iv done this for 42 yrs.
1 way to tell if the converters r glogged.is a bad egg like smell plus u can drill a 1/8 hole in front of them at the exhaust pipes and that way the vehicle will breathe.n pick up speed.but that's only if the converters r cloves up.just some info on these subjects..hope all works out.
Hi folks I had same problem with my 07 ford expedition bogging down on acceleration, I've changed fuel pump, fuel filter, maf sensor, intake manifold runner control valve, still had bogging down on acceleration but after changing intake manifold runner control valve the cel came on with code po325 which is a knock sensor it sends computer message if it detects a knock and retards the timing so once knock sensor was replaced my truck runs like new
I had the same problem with my 2002 F-150. Turns out it was a loose sparkplug. Plug finally BLEW off the cyclinder head, took the coil pack out with it. (second time it has happened to me on THIS cyclnder) Changed both plug and Coil pack... Back to the Old get up and GO! Change the air filters then check your plugs for leaks then torque them down to specs. .
I have a 2005 F-150 5.4 Trenton 3 value the truck runs but no power I hear the timing chain slap in it but it runs rough some one side it has a Bent value in it but I'm old school I thought if it was Bent it would back fire up throw intake it shakes really bad when running any idea what could be rough with it because I'm about to get a motor for it the truck is really in good shape to junk it
Hey guys i had the same problem. Solved mine by cleaning the MAF.
I changed my fuel filter after changing everything else and that was the problem. If I would of replaced the fuel filter I would have saved hundreds. BUT I have learned a ton crawling over and under about my 2001 5.4L F150.
If anyone is still having this power loss problem have it checked for exhaust leak. Couldn’t ever hear mine but after getting long tube headers, found a crack in the manifold. Problem was solved

TPS sensor it’s called a throttle position sensor that’s what I had to replace on my truck I would press the gas and it really wouldn’t get up and go like it should
Beltonanswers answered 3 years ago
He is correct it is the vehicle speed sensor should be on the top of the differential. It's a sensor just unplug it, two clips and a bolt
well for starters, aby f-150 made after 97 is a whole different animal so the symptoms and probs wont be the same, AT ALL... the trans shift solenoid and speed sensors wont effect the acceleration by as much as leaving the thing gutless, they may effect somewhat but not completely. im thinking cats. use a laser thermometer to check the temp of the cat and the pipe in front of the cat, if the difference in temp is more than 100 degrees, then your cats plugged replace it...
Anyone try the CHS sensor? Cylinder head temp sensor?
https://www.autoblog.com/2016/01/07/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-cylinder-head- temperature-sensor/
make sure their is not anything such as insulation from fender area blocking air flow to engine air cleaner assym.
Anyone find where to start
I have the same issues but only after driving for apprx 3 hours. Runs great for awhile but then lose acceleration power, engine knows, engine light goes on then off. No one has figured it out yet? Help Please!
Hey guys. I have the same problem with my 2005 f150 with 4.6 ltr. Check the vvt solenoids. If these things fails you loose power, rough idle and really crappy fuel economy.

Mine just plum feel like I have no gas petal on my 2005 f150 5.4 triton and we just changed out the fuel pump, fuel filter, all the o2 sensors, mass flow sensor. I’m so lost at this point. It was at least starting and trying to run before we put the new fuel pump in it and now it won’t even start
If your chain is slapping and no power you need to get to the chain tensioners", cheap plastic ones leek in the back hense lose oil pressure very bad! Change them.
O4 to 08 dont holf me to the yrs but if you have over 100 thousand and you havent done vct's and tensioners', i highly suggest it asap. Symptoms ; no power , clanking/rattling, low oil pressure will cause lifters to shit out, camm loabs worn down and and camm travel. No bueno". 110% sure if you have over that many miles get it done! Check your guide also while your in there
I have a 2013 f150 eco boost. I can be driving the rpm start going up and truck start jumping. Loose power. Anyone have an answer. If please email me at robertbonner2234@gmail.com that thanks

Did anyone get any real fixes too this I have an 05 f150 5.3 new fuel injectors coil packs and plugs no throttle response most of the time seems too me worse in colder temps. Also new throttle body, and fpdm. Absolutely no codes I'm stumped . Chandlershane@yahoo.com if anyone has any help
Have 07 f150 4.6 2valve with similar issue went from really awesome pickup from stop or passing on highway speeds and 19 mpg to 11 mpg just barely ok acceleration from stop to hard to get from 55 to 70 mph. Constantly shifting down or stay in that gear just trying to stay at 65 or 70. Forget passing unless downhill or 10 mile of clear lane to do so . Been like this for over yr and half. Did cats, cleaned maf, plugs, coils, checked fuel injectors. Doesnt seem to be any noticable vacuum leaks . Everyone who drives it says it doent seem sluggish but I drive it and its awful. Help Please . Really love my truck just cant get it to run just right . Also checked live data on cats and maf seems within spec what could it be. 11 mpg from 19mpg overnight ... something not right.
Need really good engine tech but hard to find guru type person at least in my area and stealership rob me blind also changed 02 sensors . Intake manifold and thermostat (actually that's when it started immediate after changing manifold and gasket cuz of leak. ) doesn't leak drop anymore but seems more than coincidence
Hi Derek. I have the same truck with the same issues. Sometimes it runs great and other times it down on power. I have changed and check pretty much everything. There is one thing that I think is the issue which I might attempt in Summer. The transmission value body has these very small ball bearings made of plastic which direct the flow of the transmission fluid. From what I have researched, they become smaller with wear causing the fluid to pass and slip the transmission. This is what I am leaning towards as I do notice the truck is down on power more when its hot than when its cold. They say that you will notice power loss from 2nd gear up but not in first. Might be worth looking into.
Yup mine also runs pretty well besides power issue and slight low idle or slight stumble at idle. Also it definately seems to be in higher gear or worse there at least. Also worse after warmed up and running for a while it's awful on highway plus mpg is worse than my old 04 5.4 lariat 3valve and that was a gas hog . Thanx I'll check on trans bearings and may do tps senson too cuz tried all else can think of .

My was same problem check your catalytic converter mine was clogged . I even had my transmission rebuild for no reason .
Yeah I changed one side already cuz it was bad and I knew it but other side seemed ok on live data stream. was working like it should so I thought the one bad side I replaced would surely fix it but no luck besides it doesnt rattle anymore from converter. I just dont know I'm stumped. And I know it has great power when running correctly. Cuz I remember. Thanks f oi r suggestions tho!

My 97 4x4 f150 has been like this for at least 2 years and I bought it with a blown head gasket and put an engine in it from my previous totaled 97 2wd f150 which had no problems other than timing slap but still would spin the tires on demand.. I never fixed the timing slap but am gonna soon but I ruled out as much as I can as was swapping everything except the transmission, 1 catalytic converter, and replacing the timing chain.. now if it were the timing chain it would only be because it got damaged in accident and threw off timing but no cel and passes CA smog no problem. The cat could be bad from head gasket but no cel. And the transmission might be weak but doesn’t exactly seem to be slipping but if I try to pass someone it will rev but not go like it should.
Derek, try turning the key to run without starting, after the chimes stop, slowly press the gas pedal to the floor all the way. Then release the gas pedal quickly and switch the key off. Repeat the sequence two more times. Finally, start it up and take a ride around the block.

I’m having the same problem with my 2004 f150 anyone find out the problem
I'm having a similar problem with my 2006 F-150 with a 5.4L 3V, crew cab, and 139,500 miles. It has great off-the-line acceleration, but if I'm going 50+ mph or so (runs about 1800 rpms at 50) and put the pedal on the floor, then it just takes its sweet time gaining speed. Anyone know what could be causing this or know of any mods under $1k that would fix this? Any solutions would help. Thank you guys

i have 06 fordf150 4x4 5.4 3v same thang as yours i was told cam blocks will do it ? i might try that its cheep .if works?
One day last week I was driving up the blvd. In my 2006 4.2 liter v6 F-150, and as I stepped on the gas it totally bogged out, no power, it shook a little and had a couple little backfires. Engine light came on, and Im lucky enough to have a good friend whose a gearhead. As he busted out his code reader. It showed 4 codes ranging from MAS (mass airflow sensor) to the ECM detected a rich or lean Air Fuel ratio on engine bank 2 Also primary ignition coil number one And cylinder misfire detected/ cylinder number 2 And oxygen sensor which calculates air fuel ratio computer recognized a rich/lean condition on one engine bank only. Interestingly, the engine would almost stall so I would immediately pull over shut the engine off, then immediately start it again and I had power for a few miles and it would happen again. I got it home by doing that repeatedly, and as long as I didnt try to step on it and very slowly gave a tiny bit of acceleration it wouldnt bog down again immediately. So first I read the probable causes and the 3 possible fixes the code reader suggested, And it sounded like there was one issue but it caused all 4 codes. I started the whole one thing at a time ordeal , changed / filled all fluids and air filters, checked all my hoses for leaks of any kind. And believe it or not just that little tune up made it a tiny bit better. Then I uncoupled the MAS, and the engine stalled so I know its not the mass airflow sensor. It was.time for a full tune up so I bought new spark plugs and ignition lines and replaced them, it only cost me about 70 bucks and another 70 for the fluids and filter replacements. And after all that it was significantly better, but still not gone, and I had yet to positively identify the primary cause. Now mind you I pride myself on my problem solving skills and at this point I went back to the codes and reread the run down. Then I noticed right before it said it might be the mass airflow sensor it mentioned fuel pressure I opened the latch to my gas tank and found the cap had deteriorated and wasnt creating a seal anymore. Bought a new one for 17 bucks and boom problem solved. Unbelievable all the codes the check engine light, the stalling were from no pressure in the fuel system which in turn screwed up the sensors, which in turn cause the mixture to be off, which cause the misfire/ backfire. True story. So now if anything goes wrong the first thing I do is check my gas cap, that and make sure I got plenty of blinker fluid.

There are several sensors that can effect your engine power. When one of these sensors sends the wrong signal it can cause the engine management computer to decrease the amount of fuel the injector sends. Does it do it only when hot or all the time? On Fords the culprit can be a faulty MAF sensor, Idle Air Control Valve, or Throttle Position Sensor. Other culprits can be the Cylinder Head Temp Sensor or O2 Sensor. It's important to see what code you are getting to help get you in the right direction. A clogged fuel filter can cause your engine to bog down when you floor the gas peddle. If your vehicle is old and has a lot of miles on it, it doesnt hurt to replace the MAF, IAC Valve and TPS sensors. You can get them a lot cheaper on Ebay then at your local auto parts store.
@Totinos64 my truck is having the same issue. Were you able to figure it out?
