I have a 96 SL2 manual that won't come out of 1st gear.

Shifter doesn't engage. Starts fine, feels like pressure on the clutch pedal, idles high. Is
that the clutch or transmission? or...

Try changing gears with the engine off, or without using the clutch if you can do so safely. If the shifter won't leave 1st in either case, or if you can move the shifter without any sign of the transmission entering and leaving neutral, the linkage is the first thing to check.
