Battery positive & grounds

When I place the negative side to the battery
terminal it smokes and burns the wires up

Do you have the correct side of the battery on the correct terminal wire? Second, look for a short to ground. Look for green crusties on your wires to starter, alternator, body ground, (ground strap) and engine. Test with voltmeter for voltage drop across these connections.

The battery will have a + symbol and a - symbol near the terminals. + is positive (usually red).
