I have a 96 4x4 suburban I am swapping out the motor. The donor motor is out of a 98 2wd 1/2 ton with no oil cooler do I have use the oil cooler adapter to clear the front driveshaft?

Ohh. Not sure on the Vortec, but on my '92 I removed the leaky oil cooler adaptor and installed the threaded adaptor from a 2wd truck. I now run a regular 350 filter and it clears the DS. Check your motor there should be two bolts going up vertically through the cooler adaptor? So if yours is the same you can install the cooler or use a 2wd filter. Here is a picture of the aftermarket 2wd oil filter adaptor, the stock one is close!
