Few tries to start - check engine light on then disappears - what is it?

For the past few weeks, (not consistently) my car will take a try or two to start,
and the check engine light will come on. After it starts, the light goes away,
and I easily drive. It typically has occurred in colder weather. Any idea to the
cause? Dreading taking in - would love some insight prior - thanks!
