Temp gauge goes up then down

What cause's the temp gauge to go up to
3/4 almost red line for a couple of secs then
it goes back down to the qtr line and it
started to do this a week after i change
thermastat

Maybe air in the system? Your sending unit for the gage could have a problem? If the sending unit is in or close to thermostat housing, maybe you bumped it, check wiring connector? I think basically most gages work off resistance to ground, the gage will read differently based on high or low resistance to ground. If one wire connector to sending unit, if you unplug it, then turn key on, the gage would show cold. If you ground that one wire with key on, it should read hot. I don't like to peg out an analog gage. I can't say every year--make--model work that way? I just thought the subject was interesting.
