The vsc light goes on and off and the SUV drops into 4wd when starting the car

It is your computer letting you know that 'vehicle stabilty control' is enabled. I guess it's going to apply whichever brake will keep you stable. I guess this is a good thing and you should be happy about it.

there is a switch or setting on the menu that will not 4wd the default...quite certain you should be able to chose which is the default setting.

I am in Arizona on flat ground sometimes when I start the car and back out of the driveway when I put the vehicle in drive the transfer case or front diff grinds loudly and will act as if it is in neutral. Now the vehicle stays in 4wd.
