What would make a knocking sound in my engine and what kind of problem could it be?

I have a 1997 Chevy blazer.  The engine started running hard and making a loud  knocking sound.

Loud, unfortunately, could be a thrown rod. Connecting rod from piston to crankshaft breaks, wrist pin breaks, cap on rod comes off from crank. Serious.
