97 Chevy Blazer. Turns over, but wont start

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I had a dead battery in my 97 Blazer. Today I went to jump and start it. When I turned the ignition it turned over great, but wouldn't start, and when I would release the key it would sputter for a short second. It seems I'm either not getting spark or fuel to the engine.

My Immediate thought was the fuel pump. I know my fuel filter is on its last leg and will be replaced soon, but I assumed is couldn't be causing it to be completely staved of fuel. I did check the fuel pump relay, and try to jump it again and still no luck.

Does anyone have suggestions and diagnostic way to narrow it down?

I have read things like: Crankshaft sensor, Ignition control module, pickup coil (seems common) if the problem is spark relate and not fuel related.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Thank you tennisshoes. I'll check first thing in the morning when I'm back at it in the garage. .I'll report back with my findings when I can tomorrow. Do you mind if I ask how the sputter when the key is coming back could indicate an ignition switch problem?
