when accelerating from a stopped condition, the automatic transmission shifts from 1st to 2nd with a hard thump.

shifting through the other gears seems fine, its only from 1st to 2nd there seems to be a problem.

Hello SJC38-- The first thing I would check is a damaged or worn univeral joint. If all is in order there I would bring it to a transmission expert. It could then be a sign of impending doom for the transmission so you want it looked at post haste. Good luck from Bovan.
