Brake boost vacuum leak?

Asked by JudesVolvo May 01, 2018 at 01:50 PM about the 2004 Volvo S40 T5 (2004.5)

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So when I bought the car I heard this noise in the
car. It sounded like a air leak where my pedals are.
It stops when I brake and accelerate. I did a little
research and a lot of people say it’s the brake
booster vacuum hose. So I opened the hood and
found the pump. I saw the hose connected to the
pump was cut with a what looks like a razor... also
when the car is shut off there’s buzzing from the
pump and it sounds like it’s pushing out air from
under my pedals. Could this be caused by the cut
on the line? I must add I tried to use electrical tape
to stop the leak a little bit. I don’t know if I can tell if
it has helped. Also I have a 2004.5 Volvo S40 t5
Turbo.

Yes, we had this same issue with my wife's 2001 S40. The short formed black plastic tube that runs from the junction connector down to the pump, had cracked and slipped off the pump connector. Car was suddenly idling very rough when sitting at a stop. When we parked the car and shut it off, it was buzzing like an electric alarm clock. I taped the cracked end on the black plastic tube and slid it back onto the pump, problems immediately vanished. Unfortunately though, electrical tape is only a temp fix. I'm searching for a new tube, auto parts stores don't carry the plastic type line (piping) needed. They have rubber vacuum line but it will not slide fully onto the self lock fittings made for the plastic line. Take Care
